The Egyptian resort of Sharm-el-Sheikh is about to implement a US$238M project in order to become totally carbon neutral by 2020. Tourism which accounts for about 11% of Egypt's GDP is crucial for the city of Sharm-el-Sheikh, which has attracted between 3 and 4 million of visitors in 2009.
According to Reuters, 'the plan is to introduce renewable energy schemes, cut water use and improve waste management to boost the environmental credentials of a resort where sprawling concrete hotel complexes have sprung up in recent decades.'
