The historic public operator is Maltacom plc, today a private company (40% of private capital) which, until the end of 2002 profited from a monopoly of fixed telecommunications and international communications. Today Maltacom competes with Vodafone International on mobile communication. Melita cable plc is the only cable-operator whose network, which covers the whole of the archipelago, is entirely equipped in fibre optics. The capital is in the majority American (NCCI and UIH).

More than one home in three is equipped with Internet on Malta (around 60,000 homes at the end of 2002). With a rate of 25 .4 per 100 inhabitants in 2001, Malta exceeds the European level of equipment.
